Project: Mapping Features of Historical Concrete
Using the 4-H Public Adventures curriculum, GPS Rinos, and ESRI's ArcView Mapping Software, the 4-H Concrete Eagles set out to discover the history of their small rural town.
The Team
WHERE IS CONCRETE?

The State Bypass was built in 1972. As you can see, it bypassed our historic downtown area.
CHALLENGES IN CONCRETE
POPULATION

Concrete has never had a population exceding 1,000. The closing of the cement plant in the 1960's caused a rapid decline in population.
FLOODING

Data Sources:
Skagit County GIS Department, WA State Dept. of Natual Resources
Notice that when Concrete is flooded access from either direction of the main road is cut off. For this reason the Middle school, which was designed as an emergency center sits at one of the highest city elevations, along with the air strip.

GROWTH
In 2000, there were 960 people in Concrete and there 493 registered buildings inside the city limits. This map indicates there are just as many residences (575) living in the non-incorporated surrounding areas.
