What is a 4-H Club?
The heart of 4-H is volunteerism. 4-H is different from many youth organizations because it depends upon volunteers. 4-H exists because there are young people and adults who want it to.
A 4-H Club is a group of youth who meet to set and achieve goals, under the guidance of an adult volunteer.
Neighborhoods can develop community clubs with shared leadership possibilities between adults, or project-focused groups may use 4-H as a way of helping youth learn new skills or rediscover important traditions. Some parents create family 4-H clubs, others enjoy using 4-H as a springboard into the community.
What kinds of 4-H Clubs are there?
4-H is whatever you want it to be. The important thing is to help youth reach their goals. 4-H has traditionally offered many clubs, developed by the needs and demands of the community at large.

A Valuable Partnership
Volunteers are expected to:
- know and carry out the Mission of 4-H Youth Development programs
- complete volunteer application and screening forms
- follow the behavior guidelines
- perform assigned roles to the best of their abilities
- maintain two-way communitcation with salaried staff
- participate in volunteer orientation and training provided by Extension
- work as team members with Extension staff
Volunteers expect Extension to:
- negotiate suitable, meaningful, and clearly defined roles
- treat them as valued co-workers
- provide orientation, training, guidance, support, and direction
- include them in planning and decision-making
- involve them with salaried staff as contributing team members
- offer a variety of opportunities and experiences for personal growth
- provide feedback on their performance
- recognize and appreciate volunteer contributions
